136 THE wicked PAVILION

when one or the other broke loose and freed the other and they streaked off to town, rejuvenated, Hke sailors on leave. They loped joyously down the highway, chasing anything that moved in the bushes, stripping clotheslines of the day's wash in back yards, scattering chickens, detouring traffic, and heading always for Mulligan's Bar at the edge of town where they had once been taken and been made much of by a highly temporary former gardener. Police, state troopers, veterinarians and sundry public officials were alerted by indignant or frightened citizens, the Hookley home was soon called and in a matter of hours the mother and son, tired but triumphant, were back in their reinforced kennels while Wharton furiously wrote checks making amends for lost laundry, broken bottles and glasses in Mulligans', lost chickens, rabbits and sundry properties.

"They have fun together, don't they. Aunt Elsie?" Gloria said dreamily. "Big dogs like to play the same as little ones, don't they. Aunt Elsie.?"

"Of course, my dear," Elsie said, looking at her niece more kindly.

Wharton came into the room, cloaked in the manner he reserved for his sister, that of a preoccupied, harassed, weary man of Christian patience and forgiveness, resigned to any personal slurs or impositions, a man not too well and given to pressing a throbbing temple or overworked heart but never mind, it's really not your fault, it will be quite all right if you will not tax him too much with your idiotic demands. He kissed Elsie tenderly on the brim of her fedora, patted Brucie and Gloria twice each on the head and said solicitously, "I hope nothing's wrong, Elsie, to bring you away from your colorful little cocktail bars." Having established his impression of Elsie's slavish devotion to bars and the fact that her visit would have to be a matter of life and death to excuse it, he remained standing with an arm around Gloria's shoulders, smiling carefully at his sister.
